Ideas that talk to the youth in #TEDxYouthDay

Por Celeste Pereyra Torres

Everybody says that young people don’t care about anything, that they don’t know what they want, that they spend the whole day in Facebook because they only live in the present, that they have no idea about the future. That’s the old and big complaint to this youth which is lost. A youth that is only one part of the young people, because there’s another part that is organizing events like TEDx even when you and other generations don’t believe it.

During November 17th and 18th, #TEDxYouthDay took place in more than 30 cities all over the world. The «Youth» is a series of events TEDx specially oriented to motivate curiosity, to spread youth initiatives, and particularly to promote young leaders to embrace the creation of new projects. That’s why it’s not surprising that a lot of the organizing teams are composed by young people and that the events were held in high schools.

«Dream big… then Do it!» Is the battle cry in every TEDx Youth. The slogan is not difficult, who doesn’t like to dream and make those dreams come true? But the effort of being constant everyday is what tests us. The truth is that you can’t dream alone or be indifferent to how the local reality impacts on the realization of our dreams. Well known figures like Kate Burock, founder of @Forbes and @othersidegroup, CMO of @GITweet, musicians and youtubers like the famous Alex Day @thatalexday, or labels like Lego with their lecture “Think beyond the brick” were present in different TEDxYouth New York to say positive messages and encourage the youth to take action.

Topics such as urban pollution, the crisis of authority figures, anaemia, premature pregnancies, single mothers, the motivation of enterprising young people, the lack of safety in big cities, life and nature, the digital education, among others, were some of the key topics of conversation in different TEDxYouth. The series of events gave young people, and others not so young, from all over the world, the chance to find a place and a function in this global movement.

From my personal experience, some months ago I became a TEDx reporter, and regardless of my geographic location, I committed myself to cover the events via Twitter following the streaming or translating the content of official accounts. Among the TEDx that I had to cover, I was lucky to see @TEDxYouthHewit and @TEDxYTheschool, both in NYC, which had similar contents and different realities at the same time. Meanwhile, the stars of the weekend were the @TEDxYouthSD (San Diego) and @TEDxYouthTokyo.

Another of the worldwide initiatives was to invite young people who shared a dream to which they were committed to make it come true. The first step to spread it was to download the poster that we showed beforehand and then print it, after that, write their personal dream on it, take a picture with the poster and post it on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #TEDxYouth o #TEDxYouthDay. Here you can see some of the reporters of all ages and nationalities committed to their dreams: click here.

The TEDxYouth phenomenon confirms that there are young people trying to talk with their communities and with the world all the time. If someone says that the youth is lost, it’s because he hasn’t been able to find it, or we should say, he hasn’t been able to listen to it. We are a generation that speaks its mind. The interesting fact is that it blurs the line between who is young and who isn’t, because it doesn’t matter who talks but what we talk about.

When it comes to weighing the initiative power of new generations, the cup can be seen half full or half empty. But before judging, it’s a must to recognize that no generation was perfect and that the ones who do and the ones who observe have always coexisted. The good thing about these times is that there is so much diversity among groups that we “feed back” to one another all the time, both for better or worse, but we always choose to do or not to do, there are no half measures.

We are not scared of using the new means or creating our own ones to find a way, a voice out to the world. Life suddenly became a book which can be written in real time by more than one writer at the same time, and the movement TEDxYouth proves it. Must be much burnt to not be heated with the idea of being young in this century and with this rules.
